4. 200426 A substitute ordinance relating to a requirement for face coverings in public spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is no reasonable way to enforce face coverings. It truly is a waste of time, energy and tax payer dollars to mandate something that cannot be monitored effectively. I believe it should be left to individuals/individual businesses whether or not a mask is required on their premises. Continue to encourage the public to wear masks whenever possible, but mandating it will be a joke quite honestly. People don't wear them correctly as it is and that won't change due to a mandate, so what is the benefit, really? Just because something seems like a good idea doesn't mean it is.

Wearing a mask is such a small price to pay for protecting our friends and neighbors from a potentially deadly virus. I also think many people are afraid of making a "political statement" by wearing a mask. This isn't a political issue and having a legal mandate requiring masks in public will do a great deal to assuage that anxiety. This is an issue that requires government to lead by example. Please show us that leadership and pass this ordinance.

We need to stop thinking as individuals and think about what is important for all of our residents and how we can best protect each other. the science clearly shows we need to be doing more.

It's not hard to wear a mask and it's far better than extended lock downs

I strongly support an ordinance requiring masks to be worn in public places and places of business. I encourage the Common Council to include language specifically requiring adults working in child care to wear masks indoors. We have the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of other states, such as Texas and Missouri, and make meaningful changes to prevent child care centers and summer camps from becoming hot spots of viral spread. As a professional caregiver myself, I would rather be safe than sorry.

I strongly support this ordinance requiring face coverings in public not only to reduce the spread of covid-19 but also for the safety of workers and their families. Wearing a face covering is a minimal hinderance for the benefit. Please support this ordinance!

I strongly support this. The City not only has the authority, but the need to enforce mask wearing. Wisconsin has the highest transmission rate of any state in the country, and it's the role of all municipalities to enforce their own mask rules. We need an ordinance like the one in Shorewood, where any publicly-accessible indoor space should be allowed to expel anyone not wearing a mask properly.

I strongly oppose. Government should not be mandating whether a business or an individual needs to wear a mask. If a business wants to require their customers to do so, that should be their choice. The science that everybody is speaking to clearly shows that the severity of this virus was grossly overestimated. Instead of looking at people that have contracted the virus, we should be looking at hospital stays and actual Covid deaths, both of which are down significantly. Science also shows us that a vast, vast majority of people that have contracted Covid recover or have no symptoms at all.

I support the wearing of masks in all public places, it's a tragedy that over 700 people died in our state already, with the highest transmission rate in the country I can't believe that this is even in question. The only way we're getting through this is by listening to the scientists, wearing masks and staying home as much as possible. We could have been over this already, but instead people are acting in a selfish and destructive way which ultimately will lead to even more death and economic disaster.

This is the easiest way to prevent the spread of covid and keep our local economy in tact. It is as simple as that. You can still breathe with a mask. Quit acting like a child, suck it up, and wear a mask. Risking the well being of others because of a mild inconvenience in inexcusable snowflake behavior

The preponderance of medical evidence has shown that in lieu of a vaccine, the best measures for preventing the spread of COVID are masks, social distancing and frequent handwashing. Masks are crucial in helping keep ourselves, our family, our friends and our community safe! While no one *wants* to wear a mask, it's a small inconvenience to help save lives, and we all must do our part

“Don’t take away my rights!” is losing its meaning. Your RIGHTS should not put someone else at risk! Technically, we can do whatever we want, BUT as soon as our right IMPACTS & HARMS SOMEONE ELSE, we typically make laws to prevent that. If you’re taking the right to your bodily autonomy so literally, you technically have the RIGHT to hit another car in traffic. HOWEVER, that right to do so would harm someone else & possibly kill (just like the virus). Since this action HARMS someone else & their right to live, there’s laws saying you CANT HIT ANOTHER CAR & there will be consequences if you do

I support the mask ordinance. It will help protect citizens against the spread of Covid-19. I will feel safer supporting local businesses with a mask ordinance. This ordinance will provide direction to the public on what to do; it will help protect workers, and ultimately help the economy. Masks are the only way forward!

This is not a personal rights issue but a community health and safety issue. We establish laws all the time to protect the health and safety of our community (e.g. speed limits, licensing requirements to sell food, etc.). Please pass this law! Certainly make sure it is designed to avoid inappropriate consequences, but pass it! There is no reputable health expert that hasn't advocated for distancing and masking as fundamental behaviors to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Make #MKEProud and do the right thing.

It is clear that how we are currently operating is not stopping the spread of COVID. We need to exercise every possible option to prevent further infections and deaths. A mask requirement is not an infringement on personal rights, it is a public health measure to positively impact the community. It is disappointing that we as a country have politicized a measure to save lives and have people who make a mandate necessary, as those opposed dangerously value individualism over collectivism.

No one wants to shut Milwaukee down again for a second time. Requiring masks will help prevent a second shutdown as cases are starting to rise.
Masks are used to protect others more than the mask wearer. Unfortunately, many people still do not wear them, leaving everyone else more exposed. Wear a mask for the greater good.

I DO NOT support this. Let people and businesses make their own choice. I will not use any business telling me I have to wear a mask to enter. You are going to kill bars, restaurants and smaller retail.

As cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Milwaukee, this ordinance would be a necessary step in the right direction. The science behind mask wearing is strong if you look for it outside of Facebook. Wearing a mask protects others from you and does not cause any harm to the wearer. This is an easy way to lower transmission and get Milwaukee closer to a true reopening. Essential workers need this. Our most vulnerable populations need this. Please do the right thing.
