There are a frightening number of commenters here invoking “science” as a reason to trample individual liberty, yet clearly failing to grasp what science is. Science is math. Math is immutable. Very rarely, if ever is science “settled” on anything. The science is not settled on mask wearing specific to COVID-19, especially mandating it. There are theories, many of them grounded in good science that SUGGEST a POSSIBLE benefit. There is NOT a consensus among physicians and researchers. Anything that is to be mandated on a large scale needs to meet a much higher burden than speculation.

If anyone wants life to get back to "normal", we need to do what it takes now. If we want to project the people we love from dying, we need to protect ourselves and help protect each other. Wearing a mask in public is essential of ALL members of our community. I am especially concerned as a teacher who is very concerned about going back to school with a class full of students. We all need to be wearing masks. We all need to limit our exposure to each other even with masks.

I support face coverings in public spaces, both indoors and out.

It is a choice to wear a mask! We are in America and we have choices and rights. I will not wear one as I get headaches from it! No mask mandate! We can make our own responsible choices!

I strongly support this ordinance because I believe in science, and I care for our Milwaukee community, even including those opposing this proposal. I look forward to the day when we can look back and see that this was clearly the best decision to make for the health and well-being of all.

Areas requiring masks have seen significant decreases in COVID-19 cases, and stability in numbers. I wear one 8 hours a day for work, and I have severe asthma. I have had no problem breathing. I also wear one in any public place I go into. Additionally, masks will be required for children when school returns, and it will be easier for them if they start now! We are all in this together, and we need to care for each other. A mask is one way to do this. Thank you for listening!

As a resident of Milwaukee and a parent of a high risk child I fully support this measure in support of community health, especially as organizations like WHO recognize that there is emerging evidence of possible airborne transmission.

We should all be wearing masks in public spaces to slow the spread of COVID-19 in Milwaukee and to protect each other, especially at-risk individuals and essential workers.

There is evidence to suggest cloth face coverings are effective at reducing COVID-19 transmission when in combination with other preventive measures, and they are most effective when they are worn by everyone. I support requiring face coverings in public spaces in the City of Milwaukee, as to keep businesses and organizations open and to get students and teachers back to school we must all do our part to slow the spread. It is also crucial to preserve the health of our vulnerable populations.

I do not support this. I can't breathe when anything covers my face and I do not have any health issues that I know of nor do I have issues normally. People should be able to choose whether or not they want to wear a mask based on their own individual various situations. You are dividing the people even further as we are already being attacked for not wearing them by some & it isn't even a law. Stop trying to muzzle us and stripping our freedoms. You are causing turmoil more than you know in this community as whole by even bringing this to the table. It is unconstitutional.

I shouldn't be told I have to wear a mask. It's cruel punishment for people who can not wear one for disabilities. I have a very hard time breathing without one on, it's not fair I won't be able to feed my children if I can't physically wear one. Evers has already said it's not constitutional.

Public places were opened up in Milwaukee and the rate of positive cases increased. People were left to their own devices to protect others and failed. Intervention is needed to slow the transmission of the disease.

    I strongly oppose this.
You are asking us to rebreathe in our own hot air on 90 degree days, this is dangerous.
This should always be an individuals choice because it’s their body.
-People are already getting bullied and discriminated against for not wearing masks, mandates will aggravate this issue.
-CDC/WHO stated that Asymptomatic transmission is rare.
    - Healthy individuals should not have to wear masks.
Leave this choice up to each individual and each business to decide what is right for them.

The masking ordinance should be passed. Leaving it to a patchwork of businesses to enforce will not effectively slow the spread of the virus or protect workers. Milwaukee needs to lead on this issue (since the State will not) and should not fall victim to bullying by a loud group of anti-science folks. Follow the science and do what’s right for your people.

I will shop exclusively outside of Milwaukee if this is passed.
Contrary to what so many people are parroting, there is NO study showing masks, worn by the community, can prevent the spread of viruses. Public mask zones might as well be science-free zones, too.

Did the council consult with a Licensed Child Psychiatrist on a recommended minimum age for face covering? Can the council explain why a two year old child is not required to wear a mask. But a three year old child must be required?

MKE County has set an age of 6&older for masks on MCTS. Many 3-5 year olds are not capable of wearing masks for extended periods of time and single parents nevertheless need to take them our for essential errands.

This turns every cashier, waitress, etc. into health department police officers, forcing them to be in potentially violent confrontations with people who refuse to wear mask.

This will be inequitably enforced against POC as the stay-at-home ordinance was. People WILL call the police on others forcing them to respond and make negative contact.

    I oppose the mask mandate.

I strongly oppose this, ESPECIALLY for children. Children should never be required to wear a mask, and will most likely not keep them on. I will not be shopping/dining at places that require masks. This will drive more business out of the city. Businesses are already hurting - why add another obstacle for them? I would think this would also be a liability for the city - what if people pass out or get sick from wearing a mask in this heat? Who is responsible? Masks do not even work, especially since almost anything can pass for a mask. Leave it up to citizens and business owners!
