I strongly support this ordinance, as it clearly is one of the few, scientifically-demonstrated ways we can safely move forward with re-opening our economy while reducing the transmission of COVID-19. The human cost is far too great to do otherwise.
Personal freedoms can not come at the cost of other people's health and safety. The Republican party has created a catastrophe that is has no plan to remedy or even accept exists. Mandated mask usage has to be enacted to attempt to recover from this catastrophe.
While there may be some conflicting medical opinion on whether or not masks can eliminate the transmission of coronavirus, it si widely accepted that do slow the transmission. In order to keep our city safe so our businesses can remain open and our children can return to school, I support this action. I am concerned about the equitable enforcement of this action and would like to see more details on this.
According to urbanmilwaukee.com on July 3, 2020, "Of the 177 individuals arrested from March 27 to May 12, 138 were African American (78 percent), and 21 were Hispanic (12 percent), according to MPD data. Only 6 percent of those arrested were white."
Ordinances pertaining to covid19 safety have already targeted black and brown communities. Let's stop legislating whiteness.
Because we know that masks are proven to slow the spread of coronavirus, they should be mandated in Milwaukee. As someone who respects other humans and their right to live, I believe that others should be required to show mutual respect for human lives. If someone does not want to wear a mask they can stay home.
I oppose the mask mandate. Individuals should have the choice whether or not they want to wear a mask in public. If you want to wear one, then do so, and if not, that's fine too. If you're worried about unmasked people, you can choose to stay home. If a business wants to require them, that's fine for that business, but an overall mask mandate for all is not necessary. As a mother of a 3 year old, I will also say that it is very unrealistic to require a mask for a 3 year old...even more so when requiring one outside in the heat while playing with other children!
Strongly support universal masking ordinances. Seatbelts save lives so we made laws requiring their use. Drug use is dangerous so we make laws restricting their use. Second hand smoke is dangerous so we make laws against smoking in bars and restaurants to protect other people from what you are exhaling. I simply cannot understand how wearing masks would infringe upon people’s rights any more than the aforementioned items. Further, SCIENCE says that universal mask use slows the spread of viruses.... it’s why doctors wear them during surgeries. Mandate mask use!
My main plea is to ask for no masks outdoors, particularly away from any public gathering location such as a playground. Taking a family walk or bike ride in my neighborhood with my children or watching my kids riding bikes on our front sidewalk is unnecessary to mask up. A pedestrian could easily avoid us and we them. Also, PLEASE raise the age requirement to 5 years old! Thanks
I am very concerned that the ordinance does not specify an end date or establish any milestones that need to be met in order for the ordinance to end. I also believe this ordinance is in direct conflict with State Supreme Court decision last month. I STRONGLY oppose.
I want to inform you of the loss of business that the City of Milwaukee will have. It is easy enough for a person to patron another business in another city/village etc without a mask mandate. At what point will we stop traumatizing our kids. From having almost every summer activity canceled or closed now to play outside they will have to have a mask on with their neighborhood friends.
Once again instead of making a big legal matter out of this (as it has been cited as unconstitutional) just say no. Instead of mandating use the money to educate and provide resources to the heavy hit area.
I strongly support this ordinance. Science has proven that wearing a mask is one of the best defensives against the spread of COVID-19. It is critical that the city intervenes at this point and mandates masks in public spaces. It is common sense. Furthermore, no one has the 'right' to expose others while in public because they don't want to wear a mask. Seatbelts are legally required to drive a car and no one seems to take any issue with that. Please act swiftly to stop the spread of this virus.
I am opposed to any and all mandatory mask requirements. I dont believe that the government has the right to force private citizens to wear masks in public. If a business wants to require a mask to enter their premises, I am ok with that. A business can require whatever it wants from a patron to enter/use their services. However, the government isnt my parent. The government doesnt know what is best for me and my situation. Is isnt the governments job to tell me what is best for me. The government can give me their opinion and what is best practice and I can make up my own mind.

Government has a responsibility to act on a collective/macro level to ensure the health and safety of society and all those in it.

Completely agree that masks need to be worn in public.

Totally disagree on mandatory masks !!
This should be up to the individual !!
