Government requiring face masks is an infringement on my freedom. Back off government. We the people should be free to make our own choices. It's NOT government's responsibility to protect people or prevent death. If it was, you'd actually pay attention to the spike in suicide rates and murder in Milwaukee, and focus on those first. Rather, you are choosing the virus because that is easiest for gaining political control under the false claim of "public safety." Not ok. Do not mandate face masks.
All medical experts agree on the need for total participation in the wearing of masks in public as the greatest factor in stopping the spread of Covid 19. How is this even debatable?
Strongly support. This is not a political issue it is a public health issue. Science shows masks help control the spread of Covid. Our "freedoms" should not extend to activities that harm others. I mask to protect you, you mask to protect me. Leaving public health decisions to individuals has not worked in the US, with terrible results. Wisconsin, in particular, has no statewide plan to help us because of politics. And businesses MUST mask staff. My son is forced to choose between his health/life and paying rent because he works at a restaurant that seems to think Covid doesn't exist.
This is not a personal issue, but a collective one. A personal decision is deciding what to have for dinner. A collective issue is the speed limit. You aren't allowed to drive 100 mph in a 30 mph zone for the safety of others. This also reminds me of case law on prayer in schools and football games. People argued that if you didn't like to hear prayer at such events, you can stay home. SCOTUS decided otherwise; it violated 1st amendment rights (Establishment Clause). Telling people to stay home if they don't like the fact that you don't want to wear a mask is a similarly flawed argument.
Strongly oppose. It is a commonsense scientific fact that wearing a mask blocks your airways and therefore leads to both hypercapnia (an increase in and accumulation of carbon dioxide in the body from breathing in exhaled air) and hypoxia (a lack of oxygen in the tissues). Masks also create a hotbed for microbes. Now consider this when it is mid 80's-90's and humid, we will have a different health issue on our hands. Who will be held responsible? Excessive fines of $500 will financially ruin people during this economic crisis. Who will enforce this mandate and how will fines be allocated?
The facts on face coverings are clear. We should all be in support of measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 and help protect our friends, family, and neighbors. It's crucial that a mask mandate is put in place for the greater good of our community.
As an immunocompromised person in Milwaukee I fully support this and believe that this should have already been enacted. There is a public health crisis, a spreading pandemic. This is not about “freedom” this is about a real threat and taking care of one another. I truly hope this is put into place and practice. I and so many others will feel safer to be out and about in Milwaukee. Plus, masks have been proven to slow the spread of the virus.
There's much data supporting the wearing of masks as a way to prevent the spread of covid, and many different countries (who hardly agree on anything) can agree on this. We have a responsibility to others to not spread disease, and this is a simple step to protect the public health. Especially in the face of such an overwhelming health crisis. This ordinance has exceptions for those who need them, but for those who can wear a mask, this helps ensure they do, saving lives and preventing the long-term side effects when someone does get sick.
Confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 is not now, nor has it ever been a reliable metric by which to measure our current station in the life of this virus. In the US we have known since March that confirmed cases are likely off by an order of magnitude or more. This was confirmed by the CDC last week. The only reason for measures such as the one proposed is to prevent death via lack of adequate emergency care, which is not a concern. An increase in positive tests in the presence of such a marked, continuous decrease in deaths over a period of over 2 months is a good thing, not reason for panic.
I participated in a Nextdoor App discussion initiated by Ald. Scott Spiker about this topic. It seems that most who support a mandate are viewing this from a health standpoint while many who oppose it view it as an un-American political statement.
Also, it's shocking to me the amount of people who voice an opposing opinion based on dubious resources such as quack doctors.
One would hope that common sense would prevail regarding the use of a mask to slow the spread of COVID-19. Unfortunately, in this day and age of conspiracy and misinformation, one cannot rely on good judgement alone.
I strongly support requiring face coverings in public spaces. Community spread in the City of Milwaukee is increasing and there is strong scientific evidence face coverings limit the spread of Covid-19.
No! Therapeutics work. Vit D works. This is tyranny. Test are for general corona. It specifically 19. It’s in the flu shot or if you had in previous years you will test positive. This is about control. Open everything!
Repeated experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of face coverings in reducing or eliminating significant spread of particles containing COVID-19. In the absence of a vaccine, masks are the best way to halt community spread, hasten the recovery of Milwaukee’s economy and save lives. By wearing masks we show our commitment to the health and well-being of our friends, neighbors and fellow Milwaukeeans.
I strongly oppose this. Hospitals are NOT getting overwhelmed with patients, the death rate is going down. A mask ordinance would be a government overreach into people's lives. A mask mandate would create stress and mental health problems for citizens and visitors. Please do NOT pass this mask mandate! Thank you.
I strongly support this. Science supports this.
Public health is the community's responsibility. No rights are being violated. None. No one has the right to unknowingly (or knowingly) exposure others during a pandemic.
Do what you want. You always do. But just know that I will be spending my money outside the city limits. It's ridiculous that you wait months to do something like this. Our numbers are going down, not up.
I fully support adopting an ordinance that would require a face covering in public spaces during the pandemic. Not only does science support the effectiveness of masks in spreading the virus, but legal precedent already exists under Wisconsin's Smoke-Free Indoor Air Law and Wisconsin's safety belt laws. Both of these laws protect the individuals themselves, as well as those around them. I can take every precaution possible, but if someone is unknowingly positive and refuses to wear a mask, I am still at risk. A mask requirement would keep our communities safer and should be adopted.

I live in MKE, but if this ordinance is put in place, I will be doing all shopping outside of city limits. I will not wear a mask.

Don’t agree with this at all. All credibility has been lost with this virus because this has been so politicized.
Repeated experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of face coverings in reducing or eliminating significant spread of particles containing COVID-19.
