My fellow leaders of the districts of the city of Milwaukee. I have to express my grievances towards the mandate for all civilians to wear masks both in public places as well in businesses and say it will not work. This would be trampling on the rights we have in the constitution of the United States. Worst of all the masks that we have cannot protect us against the virus. Cloth masks have pores that are 20-100 microns, but the virus is 1000 times smaller than the pores of the masks and can still pass through the mask. It would be like trying keep out mosquitoes with a chain length fence.

100% approve this measure as time has proven that people will not have personal responsibility unless is mandated. This is a health emergency and until there is evidence that people will be responsible I would agree that we need some sort of mandate as this is not an infringement of anyone’s rights. If people want to counterattack this mandate I would think a face mask would be similar to clothing as I believe people are not allowed to be naked in the streets.

This is not the governments place, nor is it going to have the intended effect. Milwaukee will be one of the only cities with a mandate. In Wisconsin, one can easily cross city lines and frequent businesses or parks without a mask. As a consumer, I can make my own decisions. Businesses have every right to require their patrons to wear a mask, and they should be the ones to make that decisions. It should be up to individuals to decide if they want to support a business that doesn’t require masks vs one that does. A mandate would be a blow to Milwaukee’s economy. Waukesha can have my money.

My spouse and I support developing this policy. Wearing a mask is an easy way for us to help keep each other safe. We live in a dense neighborhood and wish we saw more people wearing masks.
Also, would this affect shared spaces (elevators, entrances, etc.) in apartment and condo buildings? While these are not public spaces that accessible for everyone, as apartment dwellers, we are concerned how not wearing masks creates more risk, especially for the more vulnerable residents, in multi-family buildings.
(This represents my view as a Milwaukee resident and not as a city employee)

Thank you for doing this. I have an autoimmune disease and my 3 year old daughter has a heart defect. While the virus is mild for many, for us it would mean a 3-month hospital stay. When we venture to doctors offices and parks my fear is not that we will encounter someone who is actively ill but someone who is asymptomatic and unaware.

The mandate makes good sense for service industry workers, who would be able to return to work more safely and with less anxiety of having to have multiple close individual interactions with unmasked patrons to explain their business’s masking policy.

Strongly support. If surgeons can wear masks for hours on end while performing surgeries—we can all wear them for the 5-45 minutes we’re in a store. Do it out of respect for those who have no choice but to risk their health and work through these conditions.

100% opposed. People can/should make their own decisions.

Stand for something or fall for anything.
We’ll make it together if we follow all the same rules together. Wearing a mask shouldn’t be a political litmus test. If the staff wear a mask for your benefit, you wear a mask for them.

    Strongly oppose
1 not all can wear masks due to medical reasons
    2 our body our choice
3 wearing masks doesn't mean everyone will wear them properly
4 Government shouldn't be in our personal lives this much
5 If Milwaukee is at Phase 4 why are masks being required as more people will be visiting businesses. The fear doesn't Justify a Phase 4

As a local restaurant employee I have witnessed first hand the complications of issuing our own mask wearing policy. I’ve watched my owner get SCREAMED at, I’ve seen tables leave, one man said “I will never dine at your restaurant again.” It’s disheartening to try to heed medical experts advice and lose business at the same time. A city wide mandate would allow restaurants and bars to do the right thing, something they may have been afraid of because they can’t afford more loss in sales.

Outbreaks are currently occurring across restaurants in all of the hip areas of Milwaukee.

It's really not much to ask of customers to simply help keep restaurant employees safe.

I completely support masks being worn in all businesses. Without enforcement, there are plenty of people who are selfish enough to remain maskless and potentially harm countless others. This is not only a necessity for public health, but it protects the workers who are already at high risk through the necessity of work for survival.

It is difficult to give an opinion without seeing any official language on the mandate. However, to use LA as a template is a poor choice due to the differences in population density. While I support indoor mask wearing, I am unwilling to support a mandate defined in such vague terms as public spaces. This committee must draft more specific language to achieve the ‘clear mask requirement’ before gaining my support.

Masks need to be required for anyone entering a business in Milwaukee until there is a COVID19 vaccine that has been given to the majority of US citizens.
