2. 220273 Resolution directing the Department of Administration - Intergovernmental Relations Division to lobby for repeal of s. 940.04, Wis. Stats., which bans abortion.
Abortion is murder. You are behaving no differently than a gang of thugs meeting on a corner to conspire to murder other people. You have completely lost all sense of what the duty of your office is in the sight of Christ and neighbor. By embracing this resolution, you are abusing your authority and have declared yourselves tyrants.
I strongly support this resolution. Abortion rights are human rights and everyone should have equal assess to safe care. All women should have the right to choose what is best for them and their bodies. Women should not feel shame or fear over their choices. I am scared for my life and other women's lives. I am afraid to get pregnant, I do not feel safe. This ban will only hurt women. Women will die because of this and it is unacceptable. I am disappointed in Wisconsin and this country. We need to do better.
Is is common for the Council, you're spending way too much time on things that you don't have authority or control over. Everyone has the ability as an individual to communicate with their elected state officials about what they want done. You do not speak for Milwaukee in a monolithic way... last time I checked none of you won with 100% of the votes. Please do your actual jobs.
I support the resolution to repeal the ban on abortion. Abortion is not murder. Fetuses are not people. They do not have rights. On the other hand, those who are pregnant are people and do have rights. Abortion is a medical procedure that people should have the right to choose if they want performed.
Sadly this decision will only cause more harm to women and children. Everyone wants life but only in safe and healthy environments. An eye-opener for me was when I was talking with a younger friend. She recently experienced a pregnancy scare and I suggested she track her cycles using an app. This way, she could be more cautious during more fertile times in her cycle. After Roe vs. Wade was overturned she refused to download an app that could track her information on her cycle. This technology is meant to assist women with preventing pregnancy or vice versa assist with it when wanted. Now Women are scared to utilize the tools they have available because they fear the worst. This is a simple example but imagine how this decision will impact women's actions moving forward. This will only lead to more unsafe abortions and more unwanted pregnancies. Let's keep women safe and give them the right to make decisions for their own bodies and life.
WI needs to repeal is extremely antiquated ban on abortion. Abortion is healthcare! We must protect all womxn from every racial & socioeconomic background, especially those who are most affected by this law. Please listen to womxn. Think of your daughters, your wife, your nieces, your granddaughters, your friends: each and every one of these individuals deserves the right to access a safe abortion, no matter the reason. Countless lives are on the line with this dangerous law. We must protect abortion rights at all costs.
I strongly support this resolution. Abortion is healthcare, and healthcare should be left up to a patient and their doctor. This archaic ban was on the books before women were legally considered people, before modern medicine truly understood conception and reproduction, and before we had the technology to ensure safe abortions or pregancies. I'm terrified by the thought of a government that cares more about psuedoscience and minority rule than the right to privacy, the safety and autonomy of pregnant people (especially those that are marginalized), or the needs or safety of their children. It's time to bring the law into the 21st century and codify access to the full spectrum of modern reproductive care and resources.
I fully support repealing the ban on abortion. Every individual in this state, country, world should have the right to choose the medical care that they receive. Abortion is healthcare.
I am extremely disturbed by the blatant lawlessness coming from our Governor, State Attorney, and now this body of elected officials. I am VERY against this resolution. The state has a good and decent law on the books that our wise ancestors had enough sense to put on the books. Our elected officials don't just get to pick and chose which laws they will or will not enforce. You have a sworn duty to uphold the laws as they stand. If *you* don't like the laws, then we have a civil process here in our state that the legislature writes new laws based on input from the entire state. Also, kindly, have the courage to use plain language for what it is you wish to defend and stop hiding behind euphemisms. The barbaric, merciless, intentional killing of an innocent humans is what you are in favor of, not 'reproductive freedom'. Cowardly people lie and use propaganda to hide what it is that they are truly in favor of. Abortion is disgusting and I am glad to see it outlawed in my state of Wisconsin.
I support lobbying for the repeal of the Wisconsin Statute which bans abortion. Reproductive rights impact socioeconomic well-being and the health of women. Denying access to abortion in Wisconsin violates reproductive freedom. Abortion is healthcare and is a personal decision.
Personal privacy and bodily autonomy are integral rights in our society. This law violates both, while criminalizing the administration of an otherwise-very-safe medical procedure. Please work to repeal this law.
If you are pro-life and eager to ban abortion, I would urge you to read Caitlin Flanagan's 2019 piece about abortion. Here's an excerpt:
"No matter what the law says, women will continue to get abortions. How do I know? Because in the relatively recent past, women would allow strangers to brutalize them, to poke knitting needles and wire hangers into their wombs, to thread catheters through their cervices and fill them with Lysol, or scalding-hot water, or lye. Women have been willing to risk death to get an abortion. When we made abortion legal, we decided we weren’t going to let that happen anymore. We were not going to let one more woman arrive at a hospital with her organs rotting inside of her. We accepted that we might lose that growing baby, but we were not also going to lose that woman."
I support the repeal of abortion bans in our state. Abortion is considered a life-saving medical procedure. It is 2022, we ought to be moving forward not backward.
A citizen of the United States cannot be forced to donate blood or organs to another person, even if that person is dying in front of them and this donation is the only way to save their life. This is true even after death; vital organs cannot be removed from a corpse unless permission was given during the deceased individual’s life. Forcing women to donate their blood and uteruses to fetuses means that living women in Wisconsin have fewer rights than corpses.
According to the hunger task force, “in 2019, nearly 42% of children in Milwaukee County received FoodShare (food stamps) and a full 82% of Milwaukee’s public school students were determined to be economically disadvantaged.” If we’re going to care about children in Wisconsin, let’s start with those. Protect the lives of children in our state today by investing in education, after school programs, free high-quality childcare, racially equitable and accessible healthcare, the creation of good paying jobs, rehabilitation programs, and access to nutritious foods, and by regulating guns. Don’t reduce women to the status of incubator while neglecting and condemning the children already living in our state.
This antiquated abortion ban targets an individual’s bodily autonomy, and will not stop people from obtaining abortions or the care they need. It is woefully ignorant not to see this as a mechanism for control over reproductive decisions and it puts millions of people at risk.
I see a lot of people using religious rhetoric as basis for opposing repeal - I was born and raised by devout Christian folks who support my decision to choose when or if I want to raise children and who helped educate me on the resources available to me to find the reproductive care that my body requires —because this issue goes beyond giving birth!
Reproductive rights connect all of us. Many of our friends, family, and neighbors have deeply personal stories relating to this issue. Listen to them all. If we believe Liberty and Justice are core principles of a healthy American democracy, then this abortion ban has no place in our society.
Freedom begins and ends with bodily autonomy - government has no right to dictate what is best for one’s own body especially when it comes to reproductive health. Forced birth could mean life or death for the mother. The belief that abortions “kill babies” is one twisted by fringe religious beliefs not shared by the majority of the population.
The League of Women Voters, founded in 1920, is devoted to empowering women to chart their life course. Central to this fundamental freedom is the right to decide if and when to parent, decisions that profoundly impact all aspects of life: physical and mental health, family stability and well being, and economic and educational opportunity and destiny. The 1849 law, passed 71 years before women had the right to vote, takes effect at a time when the U.S., compared to other developed countries, is a nation with high maternal and infant mortality rates, a high child poverty rate, no guaranteed access to health care or child care, no guaranteed paid maternity leave, and where two-thirds of minimum-wage workers are women. The right to a safe and legal abortion is a matter of personal freedom and also of racial and economic justice, as limits on reproductive health services disproportionately impact Black, Brown, and low-income communities. The course of pregnancy is unpredictable and carries risks to health and life. Dangerous complications can occur suddenly, when medical decisions must be made quickly – without government intrusion.

Abortion is healthcare, and must be protected as a basic human right.

Please repeal the ancient statute which bans abortion. I, and I alone, am the only one to decide the health care I require for myself.
