To the point about people that will just
patronize businesses outside of Milwaukee that don't require masks, what about those who don't want to patronize an indoor space during such high transmission unless it does require a mask? Remember the swiss cheese approach? Masking is a critical component in the toolbox of public safety measures, and one of the easiest to implement. Relying on optional and piecemeal application at such a precarious time isn't sufficient.

Strongly support- we should be doing everything we can to support frontline workers, reduce the burden on hospitals, and keep kids in schools. I have seen how much my child has learned while in-person this year compared to a year of virtual. I understand why MPS shut things down this week, too many teachers and staff are sick and too many kids are as well. I believe schools would have closed within a week of being closed. We have to bring the rates down and keep them down. Everything that can be done, should be.

I appreciate that this ordinance has a threshold so that it is is triggered if/when there is another spike. While omicron is the variant now, we don’t know what the next one will be and it’s important to have this in place.
    Thank you

For real, does this public safety committee do anything worthwhile?

Science has proven masks don't work to the degree most think they do.

Let's see a mandate from the committee banning reckless driving.

Let's see a mandate from the committee banning auto thefts.

Let's see a mandate from the committee banning shootings.

Let's see a mandate from the committee banning homicides.

    You're all a joke.

Currently, according to the COVID tracker on the New York Times, the amount of cases per 100,000 people is greater in the Milwaukee metro area (population ~1.5 million) than in San Francisco (population ~4.6 million). Per 100k in Milwaukee county, there are 188 cases, in San Francisco county, 142 cases per 100,000 residents. One of the main differences is that San Francisco and surrounding cities have mask mandates in indoor settings. At this time, it just makes sense from a public health perspective for the time being.

Instituting a mask ordinance for Milwaukee only will do nothing to help stop the spread. It is well known that most of the cases are coming from private and home settings that are unenforceable. With none of the suburbs having such an ordinance this will also be unnecessarily harmful to Milwaukee businesses, especially restaurants.

I urge this committee to oppose this ordinance. It is unenforceable anyway. Thank you.

Masks, especially cloth ones, do not stop the spread of the sars-cov-2 virus and they cause harm — especially in children.

The City of Milwaukee’s Health Commissioner has never presented any information to the Common Council regarding: prophylaxis against covid or early, outpatient or inpatient sequential multi-drug therapeutics. This is gross negligence.

Wisconsin has exceeded 10,000 cases per day for two days in a row. Several area urgent care clinics have temporarily closed. Hospitals are overloaded. MPS doesn’t have enough staff to safely operate in person. If these conditions do not require emergency measures, then no conditions ever will. Please pass this ordinance.

As case numbers surge, hospital beds fill, and staff shortages send MPS students home for virtual school, an ordinance to require indoor masking is the least local government can do to help slow the spread of COVID. That the Fiserv Forum can fill with mostly-unmasked spectators while local schools are closed displays a startling misplacement of community priorities.

Local businesses will only do the minimum required; without a mandate mask wearing will remain woefully low. Even if the number of people following the mandate is low, it will be non-zero, and any amount of increased masking helps. Passing this ordinance signals to the public that the City cares about the citizens of this community. Rejecting the ordinance signals an abdication of leadership.

Those that wish to wear masks will, those that don't will go outside the city of Milwaukee. All another mandate will do us cause more problems.
